How Alabama's county lines were drawn
Alabama's first counties were laid out by the Mississippi Territory. Washington County, created by proclamation in 1800, first ran 300 miles east to west, and its land later went into 29 Alabama counties and 16 in Mississippi. Indian land cessions opened space for new counties: Coosa, created in 1832, was one of 14 counties organized from land the Creek Nation gave up in the Treaty of Cusseta. The state constitution then slowed the splitting. A new county must cover at least 600 square miles, and no new county line may run within seven miles of an existing courthouse. The 1901 convention allowed one exception, a smaller county out of Henry, Dale and Geneva. It became Houston County in 1903, after people in lower Henry County argued that the trip to the courthouse to pay taxes and handle legal business was too long.
