How North Carolina reached 100 counties
North Carolina's counties began with the Lords Proprietors, who in 1664 created Albemarle County and divided it into four precincts: Currituck, Perquimans, Pasquotank and Chowan. Counties gave residents a nearby place to record deeds and wills and to attend court, and gave the sheriff a base for collecting taxes and keeping order. By 1738 the 14 precincts then in existence had become counties. As settlement spread west, older counties were divided, and by 1800 there were 59. Splitting counties was often a political fight: eastern counties were divided to keep the east's majority in the legislature against the growing Piedmont and mountain regions. The total reached 100 in 1911 with Avery and Hoke counties. A 1933 law allows counties to consolidate with voter approval, but as of the early 2000s none had.
County numbers: The Department of Revenue numbers the counties 1–100 in alphabetical order for county sales tax reporting.
