Why does Indiana have 92 counties?
Indiana's oldest county, Knox, was organized on June 20, 1790, while the area was still part of the Northwest Territory. It then covered all of present Indiana and parts of four neighboring states. The rest came quickly. In the Indiana Historical Bureau's list of organization dates, more than 80 of today's 92 counties were organized between 1810 and 1840, the decades around statehood in 1816. Both state constitutions set a floor on county size. The 1816 constitution barred the General Assembly from cutting an old county below 400 square miles when it laid off a new one, and the 1851 constitution says no county may be reduced below 400 square miles. Newton County was the last. First formed in 1835, it was merged into Jasper County in 1839 and re-created on December 8, 1859.
