Privacy policy
Last updated: October 4, 2026.
In short
- There are no accounts and no forms. We don't store what you search for.
- City and ZIP code searches run in your browser, using files from this site.
- Street addresses are looked up with the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder. “Use my location” checks your position in your browser first and only asks the Census Bureau when you are outside the state on the map or right on a county line.
- Google Analytics counts visits. In the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK and Switzerland it runs without cookies.
Who is responsible
WhichCounty (whichcounty.com). Send privacy questions and requests to maps@whichcounty.com.
Hosting
The site is delivered through the network of Cloudflare, Inc. (101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA). Cloudflare processes your IP address and technical data of each request (time, page, browser) to deliver the site and to fend off attacks, and keeps them only briefly. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a secure and working site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
“Find your county”
- City and ZIP code searches are matched in your browser against a list downloaded from this site. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
- Street addresses are sent from your browser directly to the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder, which returns the county. The Census Bureau receives the address and your IP address (its privacy policy).
- “Use my location” asks your browser for your position, only after you allow it. It is compared with the county shapes on the page in your browser. If you are outside the state shown or on a county line, the coordinates are sent to the Census Bureau geocoder in the same way. We never store your position. You can withdraw the permission at any time in your browser settings (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 (Google Ireland Limited and Google LLC) to see which pages are used, so we know which maps to improve. It records the pages you view, the page you came from, your device and browser type and an approximate location derived from your IP address. Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses. It loads after the page has finished loading.
- EEA, UK and Switzerland: Google Analytics runs in “denied” mode (Google Consent Mode v2). It sets no cookies and sends only anonymous counts without an identifier.
- Everywhere else: it sets the cookies
_gaand_ga_*(up to 2 years) to tell new and returning visitors apart, based on our legitimate interest in measuring how this free site is used. You can object at any time with Google's opt-out browser add-on.
Advertising
This site may show ads served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google's Ads Settings or, for other vendors, at aboutads.info. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, ads will use cookies only after you agree in Google's consent message.
Your rights
You can ask for access to, correction or deletion of your personal data, restrict or object to its processing, and complain to a data protection authority. We don't sell or share personal information for money. Since we keep no accounts or logs of our own, most data about your visit is held by the providers above; write to maps@whichcounty.com and we will help.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes
When we change how data is handled, we update this page and its date.
