How Rhode Island's five counties came about
Rhode Island's towns are much older than its counties. Providence dates from 1636, Portsmouth from 1639, Newport from 1640 and Warwick from 1647. The colony created its first two counties on June 22, 1703, to cover all of its territory: Providence Plantations on the mainland and Rhode Island County, now Newport, for Block Island and the islands in Narragansett Bay. In 1729 Kings County, renamed Washington in 1781, was split from Providence. Bristol County was added in 1747, when Rhode Island put into effect a 1746 royal settlement of its boundary with Massachusetts. Kent County, formed from Providence in 1750, was the last. The counties have no government of their own. The Census Bureau describes them as subdivisions for the state's court system, and Rhode Island's cities provide services that county governments handle in other states.
