Delaware's counties are divided into hundreds, a term William Penn brought in 1682 for tax districts. Delaware is the only one of the original colonies still using it for county subdivisions.
Maryland also claimed the area. In 1669 it created Durham County north of the Hoarkill (Lewes), but that county never operated.

Where Delaware's three counties came from
Delaware's counties began as courts on the west side of the Delaware River and Bay. After retaking New York in 1673, the Dutch set up courts at New Amstel, now New Castle, and at the Hoarkill, later Deale and now Sussex. In 1680 a third court district, St. Jones, was carved out between them under the authority of the Duke of York. The Duke transferred the area to William Penn in 1682. On December 23 of that year Penn renamed Deale County Sussex and St. Jones County Kent, and kept the name New Castle. Together they became known as the Three Lower Counties of Pennsylvania. They met in assembly with Pennsylvania's counties until 1704, when they set up their own legislature, and Delaware cut its ties with Pennsylvania in 1776.
